The Eluru police arrested the West Godavari district YSRCP general secretary Kattula Ravi Kumar on Thursday, for sharing a video that was allegedly doctored, in which a TDP MLA is seen making casteist remarks against Dalits. Confirming the arrest, Eluru DSP M Ravi Prakash told TNM, "We have arrested Kattula Ravi Kumar for sharing the video. The investigation is still going on. We will identify the other culprits who were responsible for doctoring video." The video in question is a 2-minute clip of TDP MLA Chintamaneni Prabhakar speaking in constituency Denduluru in November last year, where he used expletives against Dalits.  “Politically you should remember something. You are Dalits. You all are downtrodden. You belong to Scheduled Castes. Politics is for us (Kammas). The leadership posts are reserved for us. Then why the f*#k are you fighting?” he said. A longer video gives the context; Prabhakar was speaking about a Dalit leader who had joined YSRCP opposing Prabhakar’s entry into the constituency. "Did I stop Jagan Mohan Reddy when he came the other day? If I intended to, wouldn't I have stopped him? Won't you have joined me?" he asks the crowd gathered. “Politically you should remember something. You are Dalits. You all are downtrodden. You belong to Scheduled Castes. Politics is for us (Kammas). The leadership posts are reserved for us. Then why the f*#k are you fighting? Why do you need politics, instead of thinking about how to raise your kids with affection?” he asked, adding, “I never used you people for my personal benefit, except when party gives a call. I'm telling you this today, they (YSRCP) should fear you. In front of the architect of the Constitution, BR Ambedkar, I'm donating buffaloes which cost Rs 80,000 to you, at the price of Rs 15,000.” While the context doesn’t change the casteist and patronising nature of the comment, the police have claimed that the video is doctored. The edited video was shared widely on social media, sparking wide protests led by opposition party, YSRCP, demanding his removal from the party. However, defending himself, Prabhakar claimed that the video was ‘mischievously edited’ by the YSRCP, and lodged a complaint with Eluru police on Wednesday and also sat on a dharna at Dr BR Ambedkar statue near Eluru junction. He said that he was willing to have a full probe by a committee led by Scheduled Caste members to find the truth in it. "If I was indeed proven to be a person with caste bias, I will never contest in elections, even as a ward member, in my life," Prabhakar said.   The video created a furore in the state with Dalit groups filing cases against the Denduluru MLA.

Opposition leaders will meet in New Delhi on February 26 to deliberate on a common minimum programme (CMP) to be presented by Congress President Rahul Gandhi, a Telugu Desam Party (TDP) leader said in Andhra Pradesh on Thursday. This follows a meeting of opposition leaders in the nation’s capital on February 13 where they decided to have a pre-poll pact and a common agenda to defeat the BJP in the Lok Sabha elections.  A senior TDP leader requesting anonymity told IANS that Gandhi, entrusted with the task of preparing the CMP, will present a copy to the opposition leaders. "The CMP will be finalised after taking suggestions from leaders of all parties," the TDP source said.  This also comes days after Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal called on his Andhra Pradesh counterpart in Amaravati. Kejriwal, who was accompanied by his deputy Manish Sisodia, met Naidu at his official residence. The Aam Admi Party (AAP) leaders understood to have discussed with Naidu, the Telugu Desam Party chief, a wide range of issues related to national politics, especially the proposal for a national alliance against Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) ahead of Lok Sabha elections. Naidu also told Kejriwal and Sisodia about the ‘raw treatment’ being meted out to Andhra Pradesh by the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government. Earlier this month, in a significant development, major national parties decided to have a pre-poll pact and a CMP to defeat the BJP in the coming Lok Sabha polls even as Congress appeared to keep its options open about tying up with Trinamool Congress in West Bengal and the AAP in Delhi. On February 13, West Bengal Chief Minister and Trinamool Congress leader Mamata Banerjee, Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister and TDP leader N. Chandrababu Naidu, Delhi Chief Minister and AAP leader Arvind Kejriwal, former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister and National Conference leader Farooq Abdullah and Rahul Gandhi met at Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) chief Sharad Pawar's residence in New Delhi.   IANS inputs

The party further said that over 20 lakh people have votes in both Andhra Pradesh and Telangana.

With an Election Commission (EC) team visiting Andhra Pradesh to audit the state voter list, the YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) on Thursday instensified its attack on the ruling Telugu Desam Party (TDP), claiming over 59 lakh fake voters had been added to the list at its behest. Out of the total 3.69 crore names on state voter rolls, over 59 lakh (16 percent) are invalid or duplicate, the YSRCP said at a press conference on Thursday and alleged that the TDP government was doing everything in its power to subvert democracy and steal the elections.  The party also released a detailed survey pointing out 59,18,631 voters under 12 different categories such as duplicate, illegal, invalid, bogus and demographically similar entries. It said the number of such voters was 52.7 lakh in September 2018. The party further said that over 20 lakh people have votes in both Andhra Pradesh and Telangana. YSRCP chief Y.S. Jaganmohan Reddy had on February 4 met the Chief Election Commissioner to bring to his notice discrepancies in the state voter list and requested him to intervene in the matter to ensure free and fair elections. “This entire list stored in a pen drive has been submitted to the CEC. On one side, their sympathiser's votes have increased, while our voters have been deleted," he alleged at the time. YSRCP Legal Cell President P. Sudhakar Reddy then filed a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) in the High Court seeking directions to the EC to rectify the discrepancies. The High Court has sought a clarification from the Election Commission in the matter after an audit of the list. Following the directive, a 10-member EC team, led by former Deputy Election Commissioner Vinod Zutshi, arrived in the state on Wednesday to conduct an audit of electoral rolls.  IANS inputs

Out of seven Assembly constituencies that fall under the Rajampet parliamentary seat, Chandrababu Naidu declared candidates for five seats.
Taking a cue from Telangana Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao, his Andhra Pradesh counterpart and Telugu Desam Party (TDP) president N. Chandrababu Naidu has started announcing candidates for Assembly elections well in advance. Naidu on Thursday announced candidates for five assembly constituencies in Kadapa district. Holding consultations with party leaders from each parliamentary constituency, Naidu is finalising the candidates for Assembly segments falling under it. Naidu began the consultations by taking up Rajampet Lok Sabha constituency. Out of seven Assembly constituencies that fall under this parliamentary seat, Naidu declared candidates for five seats. Nallari Kishan Kumar Reddy, brother of former Chief Minister and Congress leader Kiran Kumar Reddy, will contest from Pileru constituency. TDP MP from Chittoor N. Siva Prasad's son-in-law Narasimha Prasad will be the party candidate from Railway Koduru. Anusha Reddy has been named as the candidate from Punganur. The other candidates are B. Chengalrayudu (Rajampet) and Ramesh Reddy (Rayachoti). After Rajampet Lok Sabha constituency, Naidu began consultations with leaders from Kadapa constituency. TDP sources said this exercise would continue for next few days to finalise candidates for majority of the constituencies even before the announcement of poll dates by the Election Commission. Early selection of candidates will give them adequate time to run the campaign. The Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) had announced majority of the candidates for Assembly elections in Telangana nearly three months before the elections. After selecting the candidates for Assembly constituencies, Naidu will begin the process for picking up candidates for Lok Sabha polls. Simultaneous elections to Andhra Pradesh Assembly and Lok Sabha are due in April-May. As the polls get closer, politics in the state is also getting heated, with several politicians defecting to parties where they are more likely to get a ticket. At least six prominent political leaders have jumped ship to opposition parties in Andhra in the last month alone.  Read: Why Andhra’s political leaders are jumping ship ahead of elections Farmer’s death in AP: Are parties politicising the issue for their own benefit?

"First he betrayed the great NTR, then he betrayed Atal Bihari Vajpayee and now he betrayed Narendra Modi for his political interests," said Shah.
BJP President Amit Shah on Thursday said that if an award is to be given in the country for betrayal in politics, it would definitely go to Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu. Addressing a public meeting in Rajahmundry, he made a scathing attack on the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) chief, saying he has a long history of betrayals."First he betrayed the great NTR, then he betrayed Atal Bihari Vajpayee and now he betrayed Narendra Modi for his political interests," said Shah. Referring to the TDP leader's statement on Pulwama terror attack, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) chief alleged that Naidu trusts Pakistan's Prime Minister Imran Khan and not the Indian Prime Minister. "One should not stoop down to this level for his political interests," he said. The public meeting was organised to launch a nationwide campaign by the BJP to reach out to beneficiaries of various Central government schemes, ahead of the upcoming Lok Sabha elections. Shah visited the home of a Dalit woman P. Jyoti, who got the house under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana. He said Modi has fulfilled dreams of millions of Indians like her and claimed that the largest number of beneficiaries of this scheme are from Andhra Pradesh. The BJP chief said both TDP and YSR Congress parties are corrupt and dynastic parties who cannot do any good for Andhra. He pointed out that 10 of 14 tasks of Andhra Pradesh Reorganization Act were completed by the Modi government in five years though the time-frame was 10 years. He said the Modi government has given 20 major institutions, including IIT, IIIT, NIT, IIM, AIIMS, and central and tribal universities to Andhra Pradesh but Chandrababu Naidu is still accusing the Centre of not helping the state for its development."Chandrababu Naidu sits on dharna in Delhi, Bengal, Tamil Nadu and Karnataka. If he wishes to sit on dharna, then he should sit in front of his party office which in the past 5 years has not worked for the development of Andhra," said Shah. He claimed that the Centre provided all required funds for the development of state capital Amaravati and for construction of Polavaram project but the TDP government could not spend the money properly. "There is massive corruption in implementation of these projects," he said. Shah said various projects with investment of over Rs 55,400 crore were launched in coastal Andhra, adding that work would soon start on Kakinada Greenfield Petrochemical Complex in which HPCL and GAIL together propose to invest over Rs 1 lakh crore.

Several police complaints have been filed against Chintamaneni across the state seeking action against him under the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act.

The row over the alleged casteist remarks by controversial TDP MLA Chintamaneni Prabhakar against Dalit communities doesn’t seem to be dying down any time soon. A small clip of a video in which Chintamaneni was seen making certain remarks has gone viral on social media triggering huge outrage from Dalit communities and opposition parties. Several police complaints have been filed against Chintamaneni across the state seeking action against him under the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act.  The MLA was reportedly speaking in his constituency Denduluru in November last year, following a minor political commotion. With the video emerging recently, the party and the MLA are facing criticism for the assertion that Dalits don’t need to be involved in politics.  “Politically you should remember something. You are Dalits. You all are downtrodden. You belong to Scheduled Castes. Politics is for us (Kammas). The leadership posts are reserved for us. Then why the f*#k are you fighting?” he said addressing Dalits. However, even as the police complaints and protests mounted against the legislator, the MLA has complained to the police alleging that the video has been doctored/manipulated by rivals in the YSRCP to suit their interests.  Andhra Pradesh SC/ST Lawyers Forum, an organisation of SC/ST advocates has filed a complaint with Kurnool police alleging that Chintamaneni has humiliated and degraded the Dalit communities. "We are not treating your humiliating and derogatory comments as a mistake. We perceive it as your upper caste arrogance, as you have done so by thinking you have the power to talk anything,” the organisation’s President Jaya Raju Yeggoni said.   He further asked CM Chandrababu Naidu to suspend him and all other MLAs who make such derogatory comments against Dalits, from the party, if he respects Dr BR Ambedkar and Dalits. Yeggoni demanded immediate "arrest and prosecution" of Chintamaneni under SC/ST (PoA) Act, along with charges of intimidating and threatening the community. While a case has been registered and one person, Kattula Ravi Kumar, West Godavari district YSRCP general secretary, has been arrested on charges of sharing a "doctored" video, police are yet to take any action against Chintamaneni. Human Rights Forum (HRF) State Committee has condemned the comments calling them "shameless and feudal” and has also criticised CM Naidu for not taking any action. K Sudha, General Secretary and Jayashree, Vice President in a joint statement condemning the obnoxious arrest of a person on charges of "editing" the video, said, "When cutting a five minute video itself is a crime, how big a crime is it of the person(Chintamaneni) to talk in such language?" They further stated that when even the police didn't deny that he has made those remarks, "Why didn't they file a case against him? Why did't they arrest him? Police should immediately do these two things.” TNM has learnt that police haven't yet registered any case against Chintamaneni with regard to his "casteist comments". While a complaint was lodged with Kurnool police, Two town Inspector said they're seeking legal opinion on the case. Eluru DSP said there are no fresh developments and Narsapur DSP said, "We don't have any complaint in this regard.”

BJP spokesperson GVL Narasimha Rao said that ‘Uri’, which was based on surgical strikes was not produced by the party but appreciated by the people.
The Telugu Desam Party and the BJP have been at loggerheads ever since the former pulled out of the NDA coalition at the Centre. It reached a ridiculous level on Friday, the BJP claiming that the Centre faired better than the TDP led government — and they based this on the films made on the parties. BJP national spokesperson GVL Narasimha Rao, who has been regularly attacking the Chandrababu Naidu-led government in Andhra Pradesh and accusing him of appropriating Central government schemes, said, “Your (TDP) politics is happening in a cinema style for the last 10 months, that's why nobody is coming to watch your films. Whereas, films based on the success of our government like Uri, based on surgical strikes, turned out to be a huge hit. We didn't produce it, people themselves have appreciated it.” "But films produced by you... At least, earlier people used to go to theatres to watch NTR's face, but to my knowledge no film is such a disaster as this film," he said, referring to the recently released two-part film — NTR Kathanayakudu and NTR Mahanayakudu —  the biopic made on TDP founder and former Andhra Chief Minister NT Rama Rao. Narasimha Rao said that people are reluctant to watch these films because they were far from reality. "The film’s failure displays the hatred of people against your party." NTR Kathanayakudu was released on January 9 and NTR Mahanayakudu was released on Friday. The film was produced and acted by NTR's son, Balakrishna, the TDP MLA from Hindupur.  Critics have dubbed the film as propaganda, in order to woo voters ahead of the elections. NTR Kathanayakudu and NTR Mahanayakudu weren't the only exceptions. Yatra, a biopic on late CM YS Rajasekhara Reddy which released last month was also termed 'propaganda' film. However, the YSR Congress Party, which is led by YSR’s son, denied any association with the film.    The TDP exited the NDA in March 2017 after the BJP-led government at the Centre refused to grant Special Category Status to the state, which they demanded as per the Andhra Pradesh Reorganization Act 2014.

Addressing a rally at the Sri Venkateshwara University, Rahul Gandhi also assured funds for irrigation and development projects in the state if voted to power at the Centre.
Congress President Rahul Gandhi on Friday, during his visit to Andhra's temple town of Tirupati, announced that his party would accommodate the Special Category Status (SCS) while addressing "Pratheyka Hoda Barosa" rally at Sri Venkateshwara University.  "When the Congress comes to power in Delhi (Centre), no force in the world can stop us from giving special category status (SCS) to the state of Andhra Pradesh," he said.  Rahul, who came on a day-long visit, offered prayers to Lord Venkateshwara, after a nearly 20 km walk from Alipiri to temple shrine. Addressing the rally, he said that the Congress is also committed give funds for irrigation and development projects in the state if voted to power. He said that his party would not discriminate the state on the basis of the party that is ruling the state. “Irrespective of which party comes to power here (state), we will give SCS,” he said.  Attacking PM Narendra Modi, he said he had "cheated the country" by making promises like Rs 15 lakh money to each poor person and 2 crore jobs in each year. He also alleged that the Ache Din have only come for his friends after Modi came to power.  He said "everyone in the country knows that chowkidar is chor.”  Rahul Gandhi, while asserting that "SCS is the right of 5 crore people of Andhra Pradesh" lamented "Aren't you ashamed for not accommodating the SCS being Prime Minister?” Rahul said that Modi even cheated the people of Andhra by asking for 15 years time for SCS just for the sake of winning the elections. On Pulwama attack and Modi nationalism Rahul Gandhi lashed out at the PM over his response to the tragic deaths of CRPF (paramilitary) jawans in Pulwama of Kashmir. He said "some people are claiming that they are nationalists but when our 40 young boys died in Pulwama, PM Modi was in 'his' cinema (movie on Modi) shooting in a national park, even after 3.5 hours, he doesn’t have time for the jawans or to meet their families but for photos he posed with smiles and participated in the shooting.” Andhra Pradesh Congress chief N. Raghuveera Reddy, party state in-charge Oommen Chandy, former CM Nallari Kiran Kumar Reddy and ex-Union Minister Pallam Raju also participated in the rally. AP Congress earlier this week kickstarted a statewide (Anantapur to Srikakulam) bus yatra to assure people that if voted to power at the Centre, the Congress will accord SCS to Andhra Pradesh. CM Naidu was reacting to BJP President Amit Shah's statement that the former trusted the Pakistan PM more than his own.
Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu on Friday directed five questions to BJP President Amit Shah that Prime Minister Narendra Modi himself had asked former Indian Prime Minister after the terror attacks in 2013. He was responding to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) President Amith Shah’s comment that Naidu trusts the Pakistani Prime Minister and not the Indian Prime Minister in the wake of the Pulwama terror attack. Amith Shah was speaking at a public meeting in Rajahmundry on Thursday when he stated, “First he betrayed the great NTR, then he betrayed Atal Bihari Vajpayee and now he betrayed Narendra Modi for his political interests. One should not stoop down to this level for his political interests." On Friday, Chandrababu Naidu responded to Amit Shah in a strongly worded letter challenging the BJP president to show proof to support his comments. “The BJP is resorting to mudslinging the TDP, TMC and the Congress by alleging that they are trying to politicise the death of the jawans. While we are reacting to protecting the interests of the nation, you are trying to politicise the Pulwama terrorist attack. The incident took place due to intelligence failure,” wrote Naidu in his reply to Shah's comments. The TDP chief also pointed out the five questions raised by Narendra Modi during his tenure as the Chief Minister of Gujarat after the terror attacks in Bihar and Kashmir in 2013. Modi had then demanded then Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to resign over the attacks, Naidu said the video clips of the comments made by Modi then were available. Modi as the CM had then asked Manmohan Singh: 1) When the country’s security lies with the Prime Minister, how are the terrorists getting finance through hawala? 2) Does the Prime Minister have enough power to prevent terrorism? 3) While the entire Army is in your hands, how are the terrorist attacks happening? 4) Is it not a failure of intelligence? 5) Why you are not submitting resignation? “Recalling his questions, I asked whether Prime Minister Narendra Modi will resign, owning the moral responsibility for the Pulwama attack,” asked Naidu, who added, “While the martyrdom of 40 jawans in Pulwama attack has left the entire nation aghast, where is Modi? You have to offer an explanation to the entire nation as the national media said Narendra Modi was busy for three hours due to a shot with Discovery channel at the time." Naidu also demanded Shah to take back the remarks made against him and apologise to the nation.

DRI officials found cannabis (ganja) worth 1,813 kilograms packed in 361 brown coloured packets weighing approximately 5 kilos each.
An ambulance carrying 1,813 kilograms of cannabis was intercepted by sleuths from the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) in Visakhapatnam on Friday. The seized narcotic is worth Rs 2,71,95,000 in the grey market, say officials. The DRI officials nabbed the driver along with the vehicle based on a tip-off. The cannabis was being transported in an ambulance of the Force Traveller model and was heading towards Raipur in Chattisgarh. The vehicle was intercepted on the Sabbavaram- Pendurthi road on the Chennai Kolkata Highway in Andhra Pradesh. Upon searching the vehicle, the officials found cannabis worth 1,813 kilograms packed in 361 brown coloured packets weighing approximately 5 kilograms each. Cannabis, also known as marijuana or ganja is classified as a narcotic drug under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, 1985. This haul by the DRI comes two days after the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) unit in Hyderabad intercepted a truck at Rajendranagar carrying 1020 kilograms of cannabis. The contraband was concealed under 18 metric tons of coal powder in the truck coming from Visakhapatnam in AP.   The officials had to remove the coal powder using an earth mover to recover the cannabis. The 39-year-old truck driver who has since been arrested was moving the contraband to Zaheerabad in Telangana. The NCB in Hyderabad has so far seized 4,557 kilograms of cannabis in 2018-19.

Jana Sena chief Pawan Kalyan has come down heavily on his political rivals for allegedly planting stories in the media. This after certain reports in local media speculated about Jana Sena’s political alliances in the upcoming elections. In a series of tweets on Friday, Pawan Kalyan claimed that he was “facing the music” after the ruling TDP in Andhra accused him of being a partner of the YSRCP and the BJP, while in turn the opposition claimed the JSP was a supporter of Chandrababu Naidu’s party.  The actor-turned-politician’s outburst comes after a section of the media ran stories suggesting that Pawan Kalyan is in secret talks with Andhra Chief Minister and TDP leader Chandrababu Naidu. However, other reports claimed the Jana Sena is in touch with Jaganmohan Reddy’s YSRCP and BJP. TDP says JSP is a partner to YCP and BJP ; Now YCP says JSP is a partner to TDP. When I meet Sri KCR in Rajbhavan TDP says I am with YCP & TRS. When you truly work for people you have to face music from all sides.— Pawan Kalyan (@PawanKalyan) February 22, 2019 Pointing out that he did not have his own mouthpieces to counter the stories in the media, Pawan Kalyan said, "One senior Political observer told me that both ‘TDP & YCP joined hands to damage the reputation of JSP by constantly planting stories.I wish I could have my paper and TV channel to fight back.” He also said that he was inspired by political leader Kanshi Ram who established Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) without any media backup, while noting that his cadres are his channels and newspapers "My Janasainiks are my channels and newspapers.” The JSP chief urged the people to prepare for more such stories as the election dates come nearer. He further alleged that his political rivals TDP and YSRCP expect him to be support them instead of being independent "to stop all the stories". He concluded his tweets stating, "May be ,I am a small pawn in the game of political chess; but established political classes should remember ‘ I am a soldier ’ who’s is willing to fight (sic).” Media and politics in Andhra  The Telugu media in Andhra is known to have distinct political affiliations. Eenadu, the highest circulated Telugu newspaper, has openly supported the TDP and so has Andhrajyothi, another leader broadsheet. Sakshi – which has a newspaper and television channel – belongs to YSRCP chief Jagan’s wife and is essentially the party’s mouthpiece. Incidentally, despite Pawan Kalyan’s claims, it has been reported that Thota Chandrasheker, a leader in the Jana Sena Party owns the 99TV, a Telugu News outfit.

Nara Lokesh hit back alleging that KCR colluded with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Jaganmohan Reddy in a conspiracy against the TDP.
The sons of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana Chief Ministers were on Saturday locked in a war of words over their predictions about the coming Assembly elections in Andhra Pradesh. Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) working President K T Rama Rao, son of Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao, predicted that Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister and Telugu Desam Party (TDP) President N. Chandrababu Naidu's defeat was certain in the ensuing elections. KTR, as Chandrasekhar Rao's son is popularly known, told reporters that Naidu's defeat in Andhra Pradesh Assembly elections was a foregone conclusion.  He said Naidu, who was looking to call the shots in Delhi, would not be in a position to call the shots in his own state. He predicted that the YSRCP would sweep the polls in Andhra Pradesh. Hours later, Lokesh, who is a Minister in Naidu's cabinet, took to Twitter to hit back at KTR. He said KTR's remarks show that "Delhi Modi, Telangana Modi KCR and Andhra Modi Jagan" were scared of Chandrababu Naidu even in their dreams. Nara Lokesh hit back alleging that KCR colluded with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and YSRCP President Y S Jaganmohan Reddy in a conspiracy against the TDP chief. Lokesh remarked that KCR, who planned to form a Federal Front, joined hands with "420 parties" and remained confined to Telangana. He was referring to YSRCP, which has been invited by the TRS to join the proposed Federal Front. KTR had met with Jagan in January this year. With YRSCP and TRS predicted to win a large chunk of the 25 seats in Andhra Pradesh and 17 seats in Telangana respectively, Jagan joining hands with KCR for the Federal Front could make it formidable, or least give the front significant bargaining power."Unable to counter one leader, three leaders have joined hands and are hatching many conspiracies. After failing to compete with Andhra in development and welfare, TRS has joined hands with Jagan and hatched a big conspiracy to wreak havoc in the state," Lokesh tweeted. He said KCR and his aides working for the TDP's defeat were sure to be disappointed with the poll results.  IANS inputs

Hitting back, the YSRCP said that "such diversionary tactics to cover-up the failures of the TDP had become a common practice."
The ruling Telugu Desam Party (TDP) in Andhra Pradesh has lashed out at YSRCP chief YS Jaganmohan Reddy who is presently on a personal visit to London, alleging that he had travelled out of India to 'bring back hawala money'. Jagan had left to London earlier this month, with his wife Y S Bharati, to meet their daughter who is studying in London. Speaking to reporters, TDP MLC Buddha Venkanna said, "Why is Jagan in London? He has definitely had a secret meeting with Vijay Mallya. He is also looking to bring hawala money into the country by giving it to his party as a donation. We will prove this with evidence."   Referring to Prime Minister Narendra Modi's recent visit to the state, the TDP leader said, "When all parties in the state are talking about special status, what is the need of the PM to come here and not even talk about it. When it comes to fighting against the state's interests, Jagan is on one side of PM Modi and KCR (Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao) is on the other. They will get answers in the upcoming polls from the people."  A day earlier on Friday, Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu had also leveled similar allegations during a teleconference with TDP leaders. “None will go on foreign visits when elections are fast approaching. What else could be the reason behind his visit?” Naidu asked.  Hitting back, the YSRCP said that "such diversionary tactics to cover-up the failures of the TDP had become a common practice." Speaking to reporters in Hyderabad, YSRCP MLA G Srikanth Reddy said, "Chandrababu Naidu trying to make an issue out of Jagan visiting his daughter studying in London is absurd. Attributing motives to the visit of the Leader of Opposition to London and levelling baseless remarks is only to cover up his failures from the numerous controversies and serious charges against him and his governance."

Former Union Minister and Congress leader V. Kishore Chandra Deo on Sunday joined the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) along with his supporters. Deo formally joined the TDP in the presence of Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister and TDP president N. Chandrababu Naidu at an event in Amaravati. Chandrababu Naidu welcomed Deo and other leaders from Vizianagaram and Visakhapatnam districts into the TDP and said this would further strengthen the party in north coastal Andhra. Deo, a five-time Lok Sabha member and one-time Rajya Sabha member, had called on Naidu earlier this month to convey his decision to join the TDP. He said he joined the TDP in the larger interest of the state and the nation. Deo, who was Minister for Tribal Welfare and Panchayat Raj in the Manmohan Singh government from 2011 to 2014, is likely to get a TDP ticket to contest from the Araku Lok Sabha seat. He, however, said his decision to join the TDP was unconditional. One of the key politicians from north coastal Andhra, Deo had also served as Minister of State for Steel, Mines and Coal in the Charan Singh Government (1979-80). Just earlier this week, Naidu announced TDP candidates for five assembly constituencies in Kadapa district. Holding consultations with party leaders from each parliamentary constituency, Naidu is finalising the candidates for Assembly segments falling under it. Read: Why Andhra’s political leaders are jumping ship ahead of elections   IANS inputs

Three persons, including one woman, died after they consumed a toxic liquid which they mistook to be liquor in Gajuwaka, Andhra Pradesh. Eight others are receiving treatment. According to the police, the victims were ragpickers, and they found a black plastic can containing the liquid while clearing a dumpyard in Gajuwaka. The police suspect that it could have been industrial spirit. “Mistaking it to be liquor, they consumed it. Eight others are availing treatment at King George hospital in Visakhapatnam," said Gajuwaka Inspector Rama Rao said. He said that the victims were all aged 60 and above. The group was shifted to the hospital with the help of locals in the area. The police have registered a case under CrPC Section 174 (investigation over natural death). A team of officials led by District Collector K Bhaskar also visited the hospital and checked on the victims and assured them of help from the state government’s side. He also promised that the state would bear the medical expenses of the patients. Meanwhile, the Prohibition and Excise department collected samples of the liquid and sent it to a lab for further testing, to ascertain what it was. The police also said that the bodies of the deceased was sent for a post-mortem and the result of the autopsy would also provide further clarity on what the group had consumed. The police are also trying to ascertain the source of the black plastic can in which the liquid was found. This incident took place close on the heels of a tragedy in Assam where over 140 people died after consuming spurious liquor. The tragedy struck the tea gardens of Golaghat and Jorhat after a large number of people consumed spurious liquor on Thursday night at the Salmora tea estate in Golaghat, 300 km from Guwahati, and in two villages in Jorhat district. Many country liquors shops have been destroyed by the people, particularly women, following the tragedy.   IANS inputs

On KTR's prediction that Jagan would be the next Chief Minister of Andhra, Naidu said they would not succeed in their designs till he was in power.
Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu in Amaravati on Sunday alleged that Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao and YSRCP President Y S Jaganmohan Reddy were in cahoots to stall the development of Andhra Pradesh. He challenged them to join hands and fight elections against the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) instead of hatching conspiracies. Addressing a meeting, organised to welcome former Union Minister Kishore Chandra Deo into the TDP fold, Naidu dared Modi and KCR to compete with him on development. He also said Modi should visit Andhra Pradesh only after fulfilling the commitments made to the state. The TDP chief asked people to raise their voice against Modi for going back on his word and for targeting TDP leaders fighting for justice to the state. He alleged that Modi was misusing the income tax department, the CBI and the ED against those who were raising their voice for the state's rights.  Modi was going soft on Jaganmohan Reddy though 11 charge sheets were filed against him for indulging in corruption worth Rs 43,000 crore, Naidu said. "When Modi became Prime Minister he promised to be harsh on the corrupt, but he is shielding them," he said. Naidu also alleged that Chandrasekhar Rao did not want Andhra Pradesh's development as he failed to ensure Telangana's development despite being a revenue surplus state. Recalling that he developed Hyderabad as the Chief Minister of undivided Andhra Pradesh, Naidu said the city was still way ahead of Ahmedabad. On KCR's son and Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) Working President K T Rama Rao's prediction that Jaganmohan Reddy will become the Chief Minister of Andhra after the upcoming polls, Naidu said they would not succeed in their designs till he was in power. He also accused the Telangana Chief Minister of targeting Andhra businessmen in Hyderabad to pressurise them to support Jaganmohan Reddy in the coming elections. Naidu warned the YSRCP leader against spreading disharmony in the state in the name of caste and community. He said Prashant Kishore, who was acting as consultant to Jaganmohan Reddy, was trying to turn Andhra Pradesh into another Bihar.  IANS inputs

The YSRCP legislator was picked up on Sunday night for protesting against the arrest of four party activists.
Tension prevailed in Chittoor town on Monday as the police were forced to detain several activists from the opposition party, YSRCP, in Andhra Pradesh as they staged a protest against the detention of Chandragiri MLA Chevireddy Bhaskar Reddy. The YSRCP legislator was picked up on Sunday night for protesting against the arrest of four party activists. According to media reports, the incident began on Sunday evening after four YSRCP members allegedly assaulted two people who were conducting an election survey in Palaka town, which falls in Chandragiri constituency. The YSRCP men accused the duo of ‘deleting names of YSRCP sympathisers’. The duo then complained to the police that they were manhandled. Based on a complaint, the police booked the four activists under relevant sections and shifted them to Chittoor for questioning, media reports stated. Upon learning about the arrest, Bhaskar Reddy and his supporters gathered on one of the main roads of the town near the Police Training Centre (PTC) and created a massive traffic jam, following which he was taken into preventive custody and later shifted to the Satyavedu police station. The MLA’s detention only led to several more members of the YSRCP taking to the streets and being detained themselves. Meanwhile, top YSRCP leadership also stepped in and met with the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) of the state and accused the police of detaining the MLA without reason. With an Election Commission (EC) team currently in Andhra Pradesh to audit the state voter list, the YSRCP last week intensified its attack on the ruling TDP, claiming over 59 lakh fake voters had been added to the list at its behest. Out of the total 3.69 crore names on state voter rolls, over 59 lakh (16%) are invalid or duplicate, the YSRCP said at a press conference and alleged that the TDP government was doing everything in its power to subvert democracy and steal the elections.  The party also released a detailed survey pointing out 59,18,631 voters under 12 different categories such as duplicate, illegal, invalid, bogus and demographically similar entries. It said the number of such voters was 52.7 lakh in September 2018. The party further said that over 20 lakh people have a vote in both Andhra Pradesh and Telangana. With IANS inputs

Araku’s coffee is world-famous, but why are its farmers still struggling?

While coffee grown in Araku is sold at premium prices, farmers growing it don’t even get Rs 100 a kilo for the same coffee fruit.

Andhra Pradesh, especially Visakhapatnam, is very proud of its ‘Araku Coffee’. Right from the time one sets foot into the city, there are restaurants, coffee shops, food stalls selling the world-famous ‘Organic Araku Coffee’. The bittersweet scent of this coffee is all-pervasive. But a look at the lives of farmers growing this coffee paints a picture of stark contrast.  The origin of this award-winning coffee lies in the lush hills of Andhra’s reserve forest area. Over 100 kilometres away from Vizag, as one drives through the dense forest areas at an altitude of nearly 1000 metres above sea level, the roads are dotted with coffee plants and pepper creepers on either sides. Most of these coffee plants grow under the shade of jack fruit and silver oak trees. Over 93,000 tribal farmers in the Tribal area of Andhra Pradesh are engaged in cultivation of coffee. While this coffee is sold for around Rs 120 for 100 grams, these farmers don’t even get Rs 100 for a kilo of the coffee fruit they produce. In fact, this organic coffee earned global recognition when it won a gold medal at the Prix Epicures OR 2018 Award in Paris, a first for an Indian coffee brand.  Vandalam Balayya, an award-winning coffee producer from GK Veedhi mandal in Andhra Pradesh’s tribal region, is busy drying, sorting coffee beans as the harvest season for the ‘Arabica’ coffee has just ended in December and January. Hundreds of sacks are stacked in a small room, overlooking the hills, all filled with coffee plantations. “See this, this dried fruit has been sold for Rs 110-120/kg in the past,” Balayya says, as he shows us a handful of dried coffee fruit, which will have to be pulped, roasted and then grounded to get coffee powder. Vandalam Balayya, an award-winning coffee farmer from AP's GK Veedhi mandal “We have heard that people sell a cup of this coffee in Vizag and also in other countries for anywhere between Rs 150-500 a cup, but here they can’t even give us Rs 100 per kilogram. If this coffee has won an award, it means that the coffee grown in this area is good. The government must recognise that and buy it at a good price,” Balayya says. History of Araku Coffee Coffee cultivation in the reserve forest areas of AP dates back to the 60s, when the Andhra Pradesh Forest Department first took up the project and developed over 10,000 acres of plantations. This then went into the hands of the AP Forest Development Corporation in 1985, who also then brought in the Girijan Cooperative Corporation (GCC) to help engage the tribal persons living in these agency areas and give them a livelihood. Through a separate wing ‘Coffee Cell’, GCC started promoting coffee across 4,000 hectares. It was then announced in the state budget in 1985 that coffee plantation will be taken up in 5,000 acres by establishing Girijan Coffee Co-operative Development Corporation (GCCDC). According to an official of the Integrated Tribal Development Agency (ITDA), GCC gave the tribal persons access to coffee, who began realising that coffee could bring them nearly double the income compared to cultivation of paddy, millets and pulses that they were then involved in. ITDA came into the picture in 1997, when the employees of GCCDC were deployed to ITDA, which then took up coffee expansion. At present, coffee is cultivated in one lakh acres. These lands are maintained by the tribal farmers. According to data from GCC, there is currently more than 1.5 lakh acres of coffee plantation across the tribal region of AP, producing nearly 10,000 metric tonnes of coffee. The investment into cultivating coffee each season, runs into a few lakhs for each farmer. “Coffee plantations require work three times a year from us. First, what we do is clean up the plantation area (weeding), then we trim the plants, where we chop off unnecessary branches, twigs, and then we use plant-based compost and fertilisers for the plants. Once the plants bear fruit, we cut them and take it back to be dried,” says Manuguru Sankarayya, a coffee farmer from Kothuru village in GK Veedhi Mandal. This entire process involves hiring labour to help get the work done. And Sankarayya says that at the end of each season, they are hardly left with a few thousand rupees, after bearing the cost of labour. Economics of Coffee Until recently, coffee farmers were heavily dependent on middlemen who would buy the produce from them and sell them in the market, mostly in Bengaluru and parts of Karnataka. Balayya says that the prices were set based on on-going rates in the markets of Bengaluru and there were times that they got up to Rs 125 for a kilogram of dried coffee fruits. “Nearly 2,000 tonnes of coffee is produced from the entire area. We even had a mill where we would pulp the coffee fruit and sell it. We used to get Rs 220-250 a kilo for the pulped beans. Earlier, we would call private traders and businessmen from Bengaluru and parts of Karnataka and they would come buy from us. But ever since GCC has started buying from us, the prices have dropped drastically,” Balayya says. Currently, GCC buys the dried coffee fruit from these farmers for Rs 60-65 per kilo. For every acre, Balayya and neighbouring farmers produce roughly about 300 kg each without the use of any pesticides. At about Rs 60 a kilo, these farmers make hardly Rs 18,000 per acre, not including labour and other costs. Farmers say that this price is far from fair and brings them no profits for the amount of investment they put in. “For that money, what will be left for us once we pay the labourers as well?  A lot of the farmer's time and effort goes into this, but the final price we get is not worth it,” Balayya says. His son quickly adds, “We are working extremely hard. Each of us get about 10 bags. Ideally we should be making about Rs 2 lakh per season, but we only get Rs 80,000-Rs 90,000. After bearing all other costs, we are hardly left with anything to sustain ourselves. And there is no growth. As a result, people are starting to lose interest in coffee farming.” And farmers claim that every year, this price is only decreasing, with no signs of picking up. Promising support ITDA blames the involvement of middlemen and lack of awareness for the situation of the farmers. It says that the government, along with ITDA and GCC is working to uplift these farmers and give them a better income. The ITDA says that it has been actively involved through the coffee project. The coffee project, which is worth about Rs 526 crore, covers four important components: expansion, rejuvenation, doubling farmer income and organic certification, marketing of the coffee. “The idea is to double the coffee (plantation) area. The target is 1 lakh acres and we have already done around 32,000 acres. The second is to double the yield, double the productivity, what we call rejuvenation. We were given a target of 45,000 acres, and we have already completed it. The third one is to double the income through value addition. Rather than farmers selling the fruit per se, he may have to process it and sell it for getting a better price. And this, ITDA is trying to achieve through provision of baby pulpers, which are used for pulping. The fourth component is organic certification and marketing of the coffee, which according to the project, is being taken up and being entrusted to the GCC,” says DK Balaji, Project Officer in Paderu region, ITDA. GCC, on the other hand, says that it is one of the only organisations working towards the upliftment of tribal coffee farmers from the grassroots level. “The GCC now is personally taking the farmers to Bengaluru coffee market. Even there, the coffee price is decided by cup quality. This includes the taste, flavour, aroma etc. The main defect here is that during pre-harvest, they have some cultural practices. For example, after the beans are harvested, we have to dry it on the floor, but the tribal people dry it differently in the mud. The beans absorb the smell of soil and the flavour content decreases. There are cases where farmers sell a kg for Rs 90 or Rs 110. By following certain improved practices and meeting quality parameters, the same product can be sold in the international market at a dollar rate of Rs 2,000 to Rs 4,000,” T Babu Rao Naidu, Vice-Chairman and MD, GCC says. But Sankarayya says that GCC is taking away even the effort they put in. Manuguru Sankarayya, coffee farmer With GCC having set this price, farmers say that private traders and businessmen too, have stopped giving them a decent price. “Private traders take GCC’s price as a base and they are buying it at around Rs 55 a kilo. As a result, we are not making any profits from the business,” Balayya adds. The baby pulpers given by ITDA too, are not of much help, Balayya says. “Right now we get about Rs 100-120 for the pulped beans. But the time and energy required to manually pulp the coffee fruit is not worth the price. Moreover, 6 kgs of dried fruit has to be pulped to get one kg of coffee bean. So most of us prefer selling the dried fruit.” The farmers say that a fair price of at least Rs 100 for a kilo of the dried fruit and Rs 200 a kilo for the beans will ensure they earn a better livelihood from cultivating coffee. “We are cultivating right now but aren’t getting any advantage from it. Private brokers are benefitting by taking it and going to cities like Bengaluru and by calling it organic, they’re selling it at high prices,” Balayya says. Interestingly, as per reports, one kilo of coffee produced by these tribal farmers is sold for nearly Rs 7000 at a cafe in Paris. As a result, farmers have been slowly losing interest in coffee cultivation, something they all started in the hope of earning a decent livelihood. While several farmers have left and moved on to towns and cities in search of other work, many farmers grow crops such as turmeric, paddy and kidney beans to sustain coffee cultivation. Organic yet unsustainable “If you look at it based on the current situation, investment is high for me. Mostly for cutting, weeding to pluck the coffee fruit and drying them, it takes a lot.  But the return on all this is very low.  And it’s because we don’t get a fair price for the coffee. If you remove all the investments and payments, I am left with about Rs 5,000-6,000 only,” Sankarayya says. According to him, apart from a fair price, receiving loans from the government will help them with capital to invest into the crop every season. “If we invest well and get a food crop, we get better income out of it. We can pay back based on the returns we get. If the government helps us that way, we will be able to earn a good livelihood. It’s risky right now for us to approach for loans. The process is too long,” Sankarayya adds. Farmers also want a storage facility to store the fruits. They say that they dry the fruit at their own houses and don’t have anywhere to store the beans. This results in distress sale to get rid of the stock, as a result of which they don’t get a fair price either. “If forced sales and distress sales should not happen, tribal farmers need financial support. Now GCC is giving a loan of Rs 20,000 per acre to farmers as well. But we are able to help only a few people with this. Even if we do a lot, he (farmer) will not give the entire product to us. 50% will come to us and 50% will go to the broker or middleman. When he does this, the debt continues. To avoid this, the entire department has to play a role and do it properly,” GCC’s Babu Rao says. ITDA says it is currently in the process of understanding the credit needs of farmers and is planning to send a proposal to the government to come up with coffee loans. “There should be some institution close by to the farmers which should be able to give them money in times of need. Interestingly, the amount of money that farmers need is not very high. it is just Rs 5,000 or Rs 10,000. So even if you are able to get that institutional financing, it will have a profound impact on ensuring that the farmers get their due share,” Balaji says. In addition to this, ITDA is also setting up Farmer Producer Organisations (FPO) run by farmers themselves and a third-party person to help bring a fair price to the famers. This is currently being piloted in Chinthapalle mandal. But how beneficial the FPO model will be, is yet to be ascertained by the ITDA. And any such support is yet to reach the farmers in and around the GK Veedhi mandal. Currently, these farmers are in the process of harvesting another variety of coffee called ‘Robusta’, whose quality isn’t as good as the Arabica coffee. But due to the dwindling coffee income, these farmers are experimenting with whatever they can to sustain their livelihoods.
