A man was hacked to death in Andhra Pradesh’s Macherla town in Guntur district on Monday, in full public view. Visuals of the incident show the victim first trying to run away from a group of men. But he falls down and the group then attacks him with axes and sickles. The CCTV footage from the incident is blurry, and the police too are yet to identify how many attackers were there.
According to reports, this is a case of revenge killing. The victim, Prem Kumar, from Cherukupally village, reportedly was released from jail five years after he was convicted in a murder case. He reportedly came to Macherla to meet his wife, Jyotsna Priya Darshini, who works as a teacher. The incident happened near a bar in the Macherla market yard.
The Macherla town police has registered a case based on his wife’s complaint under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code, and a probe has been launched. The police are also looking into the CCTV footage of the area.
Jyotsna Priya Darshini has reportedly alleged that Muka Jagan of Nizampatnam and E Venkata Subbarao, and some accomplices, killed her husband
Macherla Town Inspector Sambasiva Rao told TNM that both the accused and the victim are history sheeters, with several cases filed against them.
“The relationship between Jagan and Prem soured in recent times over certain issues. The victim’s wife alleged that Jagan had warned Prem that he would eliminate him,” Sambasiva added. “It was a pre-planned murder as our preliminary probe suggests and the duo hatched the plan before killing Prem.”
The accused are yet to be arrested. Prem Kumar’s body has been sent for a postmortem.
The spate of killings in broad daylight that both the Telugu-speaking states have witnessed in the recent past has raised several concerns over law and order. While, Pranay Perumalla, a Dalit man, was murdered by his father-in-law in a caste killing in Miryalaguda, Telangana, a woman, Madhavi, was attacked by her own father in Hyderabad in another caste crime. Another man was hacked to death in a busy Hyderabad road in broad daylight just last week.
